Broadside Contest Entrant #8: MARY MAYER SHAPIRO

The building

consisting of brick Stone and cement

means security

A home

holding us up against ignorance

The room also implies a meaning

as we go from day to day  year to year

we venture from room to room

As we ascend

we leave behind the past year

but bring its learning

into the new year

The window symbolizes the future

as one looks out

they cannot see all that is before them

with our compression of all we have learned

we are able to seek out goals

yes

School reminds me of life

  1. This is truly meaningful to me. School was always important as I
was growing up; teachers and knowledge were admired.

  2. This one made me stop and reread right away. The writer's phrase, "our compression of all we have learned" makes the price of this poem worth the ticket, if you will pardon the cliche. Normally I dislike using Latin-based words like "compression," but this fits in a solid way here. Good, bad, funny, hateful, ugly, useful -- all learning is squeezed into a life, and we need to be truly grateful for all of it.
